Postdoctoral Fellowship in eHealth and Mental Health

Northwestern University’s Center for Behavioral Intervention Technologies (CBITs; www.cbits.northwestern.edu) is searching for a postdoctoral fellow with strong interest and competency in the development and evaluation of e-health, m-health and technology-assisted interventions. CBITs provides a unique scientific home for an interdisciplinary team working in psychology, medicine, engineering, computer science, biostatistics, and implementation science.  The goal of the center is to improve our understanding of how to employ technologies to support behavioral and psychological change from the perspective of design, development, evaluation, and implementation.  The fellow would work on one of the ongoing projects focused on treatment and prevention of depression, including: 1) the development of a context sensing mobile application that harnesses indwelling phone sensor data (GPS, Bluetooth, accelerometry, etc.) to identify specific geographic, activity, social and emotional patient states and to integrate this system into mobile interventions for depression; 2) the integration of web-based intervention and peer networking tools that use principles of online collaborative learning and supportive accountability to enhance learning and adherence; 3) evaluation of a stepped care treatment model integrating web-based care and telephone psychotherapy for the treatment of depression in primary care, 4) the creation of a mobile intervention that monitors adherence to medications using cellular enabled pill dispensers, provides just-in-time reminders via mobile phones, monitors response to treatment and side effects, and provides aggregated, actionable information to prescribing physicians, and 5) the development of an adaptive mobile phone intervention that can detect which types of intervention components are most likely to be used and useful to the patient, allowing the delivery of highly tailored treatment.  The primary objective of this fellowship is to prepare the individual for an academically oriented career in clinical research. The fellow will have the use of data for publications. Minority applicants encouraged. Appointments begin July 2014 and are for one year, renewable to two, pending budgetary approval. Salary is competitive. Qualifications include Ph.D. in clinical psychology by the start date, evidence of scholarship, and excellent writing skills.
