This webinar will focus on the recent report by Hoffman that found collusion among APA, leading members, and staff and the Department of Defense in the support of psychologists’ involvement in interrogations during the course of the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Global War on Terrorism. The webinar will focus on the precise nature of the findings and the remedial actions taken thus far by APA in response to the findings. Solicitation of additional thoughts and actions from the participants will be sought and communicated to the APA leadership.

SSCP Student Poster Competition Winners

SSCP holds a student poster competition at each annual meeting of the Association for Psychological Science. This year, we had almost 70 posters presented by student members of SSCP. I thank Andrea Niles and Brooke Ammerman for providing a tremendous amount of help in organizing the review process for the initial abstract submissions. In addition, I thank the other judges for the competition who met with student presenters at the poster session – Bethany Teachman, Sara Bufferd, Stewart Shankman, David Rosmarin, and Mitch Prinstein.

The competition yielded great diversity in the content of the work, but was uniformly of high quality. This led to numerous difficult decisions for the judges. This year, SSCP was able to award prizes to 3 winners ($200 prize) and 6 Distinguished Contributions ($100 prize).

SSCP Student Social at APS Convention

We would like to formally invite all students attending APS to a special SSCP Student Social event! The event will be hosted at the New York Beer Company (a 2 block walk from the convention hotel).  A big thank you to our SSCP Campus Representatives for helping plan this event! 

We have ordered appetizers and pizza for lunch (including vegetarian and gluten free options), so join us and take a break from the convention, chat with leaders in the field of clinical science, and network with other graduate students!  

The following SSCP board members will also be attending this event for an informal Q&A: 

• Bethany Teachman, professor of psychology at the University of Virginia, studies cognitive processes that contribute to the development and maintenance of anxiety disorders.  She is the past president of SSCP
• Doug Mennin, professor of psychology at Hunter College, studies the application of affective science to the treatment of anxiety and mood disorders with a focus on the most complex and severe forms of these disorders.
• Mitch Prinstein, professor of psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, studies developmental psychopathology and how interpersonal experiences in adolescence contribute to depression, self-injury, and poor health behaviors.  Mitch is the current SSCP president.
• Stew Shankman, associate professor of psychology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, uses multiple methods of assessment to better understand links between anxiety and depression and familial transmission of emotional disorders.
• Sara Bufferd, assistant professor of psychology at California State University, San Marcos, studies developmental psychopathology with a focus on the onset and course of emotional and behavioral problems in young children.

This event is open to all students, so please feel free to bring your friends so they can learn more about the many benefits of student membership!

Ever wondered how different psychological scientists ended up doing what they do? We did!

The Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology (SSCP) video series entitled "How Did I Get Here" was designed to complement the joint APS and SSCP Psychological Science Career Mentorship Match program to help students and early career psychologists obtain more information about a ​variety of career paths available to them. 

In this video series, psychological scientists in various positions describe their career path, discuss obstacles that were overcome along the way to their current position, and share what they wish they had known earlier in their career. These are the personal stories you don’t get from a CV!

Feedback Needed from Students for the Upcoming SSCP Internship Directory

Hi Everyone! 

Hope you are having a nice summer. We are updating the SSCP Internship directory (https://sites.google.com/site/sscpwebsite/internship-directory), which was last updated in 2009, developed as a resource to help students find APA accredited internship sites. 

We are currently working with Bethany Teachman and Mitch Prinstein to begin the process of updating the internship directory. We are very interested in students ideas or feedback on what might be most helpful in editing the internship directory for this upcoming year, and would love to hear your thoughts. 

For example, is there any information that cannot be found on the APPIC website that would be helpful for us to collect for the SSCP internship directory? If so, what information would be of interest? 

Would it be most helpful to provide a 'curated' list of internship sites, or to include information from any site that completes information for the directory?

Is the current length of the directory too long, or ok? 

Any other ideas on things that might be helpful? Email us!

It is that time of year again – we need nominations for four positions.

Call for Nominations for 2014 SSCP Election

The Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology (SSCP) invites nominations for four positions for the SSCP Executive Board: President-Elect; Representative to the Board of Directors of Division 12; Member-At-Large; and Student Representative.

Descriptions of the duties of each position are listed below.

All terms of office will begin January 1, 2015. Please see our website for a list of current and past Board members.

•           The Presidential cycle is 3 years: 1 year each as President-Elect, President, and Past-President.

•           The Representative to the Board of Directors of Division 12 is a 3-year term.

•           Each Member-At-Large and Student Representative serves a 2-year term.

Apply to join the Division 53 Student Advisory Board!

The Student Advisory Board of the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology (Division 53) is pleased to invite our graduate student members to apply to serve on the Division 53 Student Advisory Board. Student Advisory Board members serve two-year positions. Along with the two Student Representatives, Student Advisory Board members work to promote student interests, provide a range of student programming, recognize accomplishments of student members, andencourage student involvement in Division 53 and APA at large. This is a great opportunity to serve the students of the division and gain leadership experience at a national level.

Applicants must be student members of Division 53, and must be enrolled in an APA-approved graduateprogram in professional psychology with specific interests in clinical child and/or adolescent psychology. Applications should include the following:

- Contact information (full name, email, phone)
- A copy of your curriculum vitae
- A short statement (1-2 pages) indicating your interest in serving on the Student Advisory Board, and highlighting how you would contribute to the Student Advisory Board and Division 53
- A letter of recommendation from your primary mentor (can be emailed directly by mentor or included with your other application materials)

SSCP Student Journal Club Update

Hi SSCP student members,

As you know, in Fall 2013 we had a student-led journal club with the goal of providing scholarly summaries and promoting discussion on recently published articles of interest to student members. We would like to start this up again over the summer, when students have a little more free time!  This is a great opportunity to interact with fellow students, share your research interests with others, and do some easy reading (i.e., brief summaries of articles prepared for you) outside of your immediate field. Job Mentorship Opportunity - Connect With Psychological Scientists Working In Diverse Roles

The Society for the Science of Clinical Psychology (SSCP) and the Association for Psychological Science (APS) have developed a new program to support job mentorship for our graduate students, post-doctoral and early career members.  This program is designed to connect students looking for a range of employment opportunities with psychological scientists working in a variety of jobs and settings. We have developed a searchable database for students and early career psychologists to put them in contact with psychological scientists working in diverse roles to learn directly how they attained their jobs and what the jobs involve.

Students can search the directory to learn about particular jobs, settings, employment activities of interest, and then contact those scientists who have jobsthat they would like to learn more about.

Journal Club Interest Survey

We are looking into starting up our Journal Club again.  For those of you who are not aware, the purpose of the SSCP Student Journal Club is to provide scholarly summaries and discussion on recently published articles of interest to student members. In the past we have chosen a relevant topic for the articles to be related to, though this is not necessary.  For example, this past Fall the articles were all on Emotion Regulation.

Students can be a member of the Student Journal Club and (a) choose to present/co-present an article/lead the discussion of an article, or (b) just read and partake in discussion of articles.  

If you could please fill out this short survey to help us gauge interest and figure out how to improve the Journal Club to make it as useful to members as possible, it would be greatly appreciated!  Questions include if you are interested in participating, how frequently you would like articles to be presented, when you would like the journal club to take place, suggestions for topics, and suggestions for how to better facilitate discussion.

SSCP Lawrence H. Cohen Outstanding Mentor Award

Please consider nominating your mentor for this important award:

The SSCP Lawrence H. Cohen Outstanding Mentor Award was initiated in 2013 and is dedicated to the memory of Lawrence H. Cohen, Professor of Psychology at the University of Delaware and SSCP member, who was known during his career as a strong advocate and mentor to many students in clinical psychology. The 2013 recipient was Dr. Matthew Nock, Professor of Psychology, Harvard University.

The winner of this award will come from the ranks of members of SSCP in good standing with substantial experience mentoring clinical psychology graduate students, interns, and/or postdoctoral fellows in clinical psychological science. Outstanding mentors are those who have provided exceptional guidance through leadership, role modeling, advising, supervision, instruction, advocacy, and other activities aimed at providing opportunities for scientific growth, professional development, and networking.

Nominees will be evaluated on these criteria, as well as the accomplishments of their current and former doctoral students, interns and/or postdoctoral fellows in terms of awards, grants, publications, presentations, and positions attained upon completion of their training, etc. However, these criteria will be weighed in the context of the mentor nominee’s stage of career. Strong consideration will be given to the statements of nominees’ current and former doctoral students, interns, and/or postdoctoral fellows about their mentor’s qualitative and specific impact on their professional training and development.

Appropriate nominators are current or past trainees of the mentor. Fellow colleagues may nominate a mentor as well, if they have sufficient knowledge of the mentoring practices of the nominee.

SSCP Student Listerv Facilitator Position

We have an opening for a new listserv faciltator and are taking self-nominations at this time. This is a wonderful way to get more involved with SSCP and your fellow graduate students!  As the last listserv facilitator, I am happy to answer any questions you have about the position!

In general, the duties of the listserv facilitator are to ensure that the listserv stays active and meets student needs by (a) posting discussion questions, (b) organizing guest appearances by faculty members, other psychologists, and graduate students to address various topics, (c) monitoring professional organizations (ABCT, APAGS, APS) and disseminating pertinent information to the wider student membership, and (d) maintaining the SSCP Student website: http://sscpstudent.blogspot.com/

Like SSCP, APS has a stake in advancing clinical science, particularly for students. This year we worked with the U.S. House of Representatives on a Department of Veterans Affairs bill so that the VA will recognize a new accreditation system for psychology internships, the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS). Last year APS worked with Congress so that the National Science Foundation would allow NSF Fellowship applications from clinical science students, something NSF previously discouraged. This kind of Congressional and Federal Agency recognition of your student training reflects the growing stature of clinical science as a way for improving public health.

The Move Towards Population Health Management - What Psychologists Should Know

The 2014 SSCP Student Poster Award Competition will take place at the 26th

APS Annual Convention, May 22-25, 2013 - San Francisco, CA, USA

The Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology (SSCP) hosts an annual
student poster session at the APS Annual Convention.  Those receiving the
top award receive $200.  Winners of the "Distinguished Contributions" Award
receive $100.  A year complimentary membership in APS is also awarded to
winners in the two categories.  The number of awardees is at the discretion
of the reviewers.  The total amount of cash awarded in 2013 was $1,500.

UNC Chapel Hill Diversifying Clinical Psychology Weekend

This weekend of seminars and workshops at UNC Chapel Hill is intended for ethnic/racial minority students who are interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology.  The deadline is approaching soon, January 15.
