Two ASD Specific Postdoctoral Fellowships at Children's Hospital of New Orleans

Two positions available for postdoctoral fellowships in psychology, with a focus on the evaluation and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs), beginning September 1, 2014.  Each fellowship is a two year training opportunity which provides supervised experience in work with children (birth-21 years) and families in The Autism Center at Children’s Hospital, which is part of the Department of Psychology.

The Autism Center at Children’s Hospital has experienced a dynamic expansion of services provided to families who have children with ASDs.  Existing services at the hospital include an autism diagnostic center staffed by two clinical psychologists, behavioral intervention using a family consultation model staffed by a clinical psychologist and a BCBA, research efforts staffed by a cognitive neuroscientist, and training to graduate and undergraduate students from local universities provided by multiple staff members.
Each position involves evaluation and treatment oriented activities.  Regarding assessment, each fellow will conduct comprehensive evaluations with children suspected of having Autism Spectrum Disorders and provide treatment recommendations and evaluation reports to families.  Fellows will be trained in the use of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – 2nd Edition (ADOS-2) and clinical interviewing methods relevant to ASDs with the goal for each fellow to complete 8-10 independent evaluations per month. Regarding intervention activities, each fellow will assist the psychologist and/or ABA therapist in providing social skills groups.  The postdoctoral fellow will also have the opportunity to provide behaviorally oriented consultation/intervention to children and families. The program’s treatment model includes clinic-based ABA intervention services using a family consultation model.  Upon completion of the two-year, full-time program, fellows will gain clinical skills required for independent practice.  Additionally, fellows are encouraged to participate in and/or develop research and present at national meetings.
Prior experience working with children with ASDs and their families required.  Applicants also should have a background in behavioral assessment/treatment and experience in clinical child psychology. Prior experience with the ADOS-2 and ADI-R preferred.   Applicants must have a PhD in Psychology including final defense of the dissertation prior to starting the fellowship.  The fellow will function within a vibrant clinical and academic setting with opportunities for research and supervision of psychology trainees.  The stipend is competitive and includes a generous benefit package.
