Clinical Health Psychology Internship at OSU Wexner Medical Center

At a time when graduate students are faced with fewer internship options, I am very happy to announce that we are starting a pre-doctoral internship focused on clinical health psychology in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at The Ohio State University.

If you are not already familiar with our campus, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC) is among the largest and most diverse academic medical centers in the country and the only academic medical center in central Ohio. OSUWMC includes:

•       a top-ranked College of Medicine
•       six hospitals with a total of over 1000 patient beds
•       a unified medical staff of which psychologists are members
•       a network of primary and specialty care practices
•       more than a dozen research centers and institutes
•       20 core laboratories

For over 20 years, US News & World Report has consistently ranked OSUWMC one of the best in the country.  Ten specialty areas are likewise nationally ranked. The medical center campus is rich in opportunities and resources.

Our internship program is designed to: (1) provide training in evidence-based assessment and treatment; (2) provide experiences as a psychologist working as an integral member of an inter-professional health care team; (3) enhance awareness of and sensitivity to issues reflecting cultural and ethnic diversity and health disparities; and (4) help interns further develop their professional identity as clinical health psychologists by providing faculty mentoring that is consistent with clinician-scientist values and practices.

Recruitment for our first class begins this year, with a start date of July 1, 2015 for our first group of interns. Applications are due byNovember 1, 2014. If you are not aware, APA has made a substantial change in the accreditation process. Once our first group of interns is on site, we plan to apply for “accredited on contingency” status. Pending acceptance of our self-study, we will be able to schedule the site visit. It is our hope that we will be able to have our first cohort of interns graduate from an accredited program.

Please let me know if you would like to receive a brochure describing the internship. Our website is currently under construction but it should be completed shortly. The department website is located at http://psychiatry.osu.edu/ and the internship is listed in the Education offerings.

Interns will receive a salary of $27,000 plus university benefits including medical, dental, and vision care. It is standard for trainees to receive 4 weeks of vacation. We also offer a generous stipend for educational activities/materials and time for these activities is considered academic leave (not vacation).

If you or any of your students have questions, please contact me. I can be reached at 614-293-0697 or at Cheryl.Carmin@osumc.edu. We are truly pleased to extend our education mission to what I know are a very talented group of psychology graduate students.
