Our Fellowship Program

The Division of Behavioral Health at Nemours/A.I.duPont Hospital for Children is pleased to announce the availability of ten 12 month Postdoctoral Fellowships in Pediatric Psychology/Behavioral Health beginningSeptember 1, 2015. Positions are open to graduates from APA approved doctoral programs that have completed their internship training. Onsite interviews will be extended to competitive applicants. The fellowships offer clinical and/or research training with a number of various specialty clinics including Early Childhood, Autism, Neuropsychology, Primary Care, Endocrinology, Oncology, Craniofacial/Cleft Palate, Cardiology and Gastroenterology. Specific postdoctoral fellowships are outlined below. In addition to clinical hours, fellows participate in didactic seminars spanning topics such as professional development, clinical supervision, research, and medical issues, and hospital grand rounds. Fellows also have opportunities to supervise other psychology trainees as we have psychology externship and internship programs.

Positions:

Early Childhood:

· Major Emphasis: Early Childhood

· Minor Emphasis: Child Clinical

Applicants ideally will have a background in clinical child and/or pediatric psychology with early childhood experience. This position offers a unique opportunity to become immersed in the very early years of 0-3 by providing services through Child Development Watch (CDW). CDW is a state funded 0-3 early intervention program with an emphasis on home-based and/or site based daycare observations and consultations. As the psychologist on-site one day per week, the post-doc is an active participant in multi-disciplinary developmental assessments which can include other specialists from speech/language, occupational therapy, physical therapy, nutrition, audiology, and nursing. This family centered approach is based on a brief therapeutic model and is designed to enhance development of appropriate behavior management strategies as well as to allow for observations of the child in a naturalistic setting with familiar caregivers. Post-doctoral fellows spend approximately 40% of their clinical time associated with CDW either on site, completing family or day care visits, or completing related work at the hospital. Additional clinical time is flexible and focused on early childhood psychological assessment and therapy experiences.

Neuropsychology: Not Accepting Applications for the 2015-16 training year

· Major Emphasis: Neuropsychology

This is a position with assessment, team collaboration, individual, group and family treatment as its main components. The capacity to work in a team environment as well as within a hospital environment is essential Part of the position consists of work within a rehabilitation program, inpatient and a day hospital outpatient component, as well as short and long term follow up. The primary population is of children/teens with a brain based illness or injury. Traumatic brain injuries range from mild (concussions) to severe. Other aspects include neuropsychological testing with other populations, again brain based in nature. Experience in neuropsychological testing is necessary for this position. The post doctoral fellow specifically runs the psychology adjustment group for adolescents, for 3 sessions a week. Neuropsychological testing figures quite prominently in what we do but there is a substantial therapy component as well. This can be involved in either straight-forward adjustment work, or in devising and implementing strategies of remediation for more long-term cognitive deficits as well as behavioral programs.

Child Clinical:

· Minor Emphasis: Research Primary Cares

Applicants ideally will have a background in clinical child and/or pediatric psychology with interest/experience working in a primary care setting. 40% of the fellow’s time will be spent off site in Nemours pediatric practices fully participating with pediatricians, nurses, and medical residents in the model of integrated care. This position also offers the opportunity to spend one day (20%) on research related to primary care practice. . The remaining 40% of this fellow’s time will be spent engaging in clinical work and research within our hospital based multidisciplinary Weight Management clinic where families with children and adolescents struggling with obesity are evaluated and treated.

Pediatric Psychology:

· Major Emphasis: Diabetes

· Minor Emphasis: Trauma

Applicants ideally will have a background in child clinical and/ or pediatric psychology with interest/experience participating in a hospital based Endocrinology team. The fellow will join the Improving Diabetes through Education and Lifestyle (IDEAL) Clinic. This is an interdisciplinary family group intervention to empower youth and families to meet the challenges associated with Type I diabetes. Families learn problem solving and communication strategies to overcome challenges in diabetes management. The team includes a diabetes Advanced Nurse Practitioner, nutritionist, psychology fellow and psychology intern (supervised by attending psychologist and the fellow). Further, the fellow will be involved in the Diabetes Collaborative clinic. 20% of the fellow’s time is also allotted to diabetes or trauma focused research. The remaining time includes psychological assessment, trauma consultation and treatment, and providing medical education to the current cohort of medical residents

Pediatric Psychology:

· Major Emphasis: Hematology/Oncology

· Minor Emphasis: Craniofacial

This fellowship position is spent in Hem/Onc related activities for 60% including BBMT, survivorship and sickle cell clinics, and related research. Minor rotations will include psychological assessment and participation with the Craniofacial team. The fellow is involved in conducting consultation and ongoing therapy, as well as collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.

Pediatric Psychology:

· Major Emphasis: First State School

· Minor Emphasis: Gastroenterology

The First State School position is a 50% commitment to the opportunity to provide therapy (individual, family, and group), consultation (classroom teachers, nursing staff), and brief assessment services in a school-based setting for children with a variety of chronic illness conditions (e.g., diabetes, sickle cell anemia, hemophilia, HIV, kidney/liver disease, asthma, cancer). The First State School at Wilmington Hospital (Christiana Care Health System) is dedicated to providing integrated specialized medical and therapeutic care (e.g., nursing, psychological, psychiatric, occupational, physical, and speech therapies) with traditional classroom schooling from K-12. Therapy work is targeted toward medical adherence, adjustment to illness, coping with stressors, and enhancing school academic and social functioning. The remaining 50% of this position includes participation in the multidisciplinary gastroenterology clinic and one day devoted to the fast paced Access clinic providing initial consultation to families and directing them to the appropriate resources in an efficient and accurate manner.

Pediatric Psychology:

· Major Emphasis: Cardiology

· Minor Emphasis: Pain

This fellowship position provides 60% experience in Pediatric Cardiology, which includes assessment and parent consultation as part of an interdisciplinary cardiac neurodevelopmental follow up program, consultation-liaison within the cardiac intensive care unit, and cardiac transplant psychosocial evaluation. The fellow will participate in weekly interdisciplinary developmental rounds on the cardiac unit and will be an active member of a cardiac developmental care committee that strives to promote developmental care practices in the Cardiac ICU. The patient population ranges from newborns to young adults with a variety of cardiac conditions including congenital heart disease, arrhythmias and heart failure. One day is devoted to neurodevelopmental/psychosocial research in Cardiology.This fellowship position provides a 10% experience in Pediatric Solid Organ Transplant (kidney, liver). Duties include pre-transplant psychosocial evaluations of children listed for transplant, inpatient consultation-liaison services to the nephrology and hepatology services, and ongoing outpatient psychotherapy with pre- and post-transplant patients and families. The fellow will participate in kidney and liver interdisciplinary transplant team rounds. Additional duties include running a weekly inpatient group for adolescents with chronic illness (Coping with Hospitalization and Treatment; CHaT) focused on improving acceptance of chronic illness, adherence, and active coping during prolonged hospitalization.Minor rotations will include twice monthly neuro psychological assessment and pain management consultation, with the opportunity to provide both individual and group therapy services related to pain. Autism Specific Child Clinical:

This position will primarily involve direct clinical care with ASD as a referral question, including initial consultations, comprehensive testing, ongoing treatment (both behavior-based and CBT), and exposure to patients with ASD in a medical setting and group interventions. Additionally, the fellow will have the unique experience of participating in ongoing program development, which includes collaboration with providers at Nemours, in the community, and at school. Although ASD is often the referral question, there will be a substantial component of child clinical assessment and treatment, as well as medically complicated developmental concerns, in order to best serve this population. Applicants ideally will have a documented interest and clinical experience in ASD; although ADOS-2 training is not required, it is preferred.

Center for Healthcare Delivery Science Fellowship:

· Major Emphasis: Research: Pediatric illnesses

· Minor Emphasis: Child Clinical/chronic illness

We are seeking an individual interested in research on psychosocial factors associated with pediatric healthcare outcomes who aspires to an academic research career. The fellow will be based at A.I. duPont Hospital for Children (AIDHC) in Wilmington, Delaware. He/She will be mentored on research by Dr. Melissa A. Alderfer, participating in family-based research in a range of pediatric illnesses possibly including oncology, cardiology, genetics, and palliative care. The fellow will also collaborate with other multidisciplinary investigators from the CHDS and throughout the Nemours children’s health system in the Delaware Valley and Florida. The Fellow is expected to develop his/her own research projects and will receive mentored guidance in the preparation of manuscripts and development of grant proposals. Approximately 25% of the fellow’s time will be devoted to clinical work in the Division of Behavioral Health at AIDHC. The fellow will also participate in training opportunities with other fellows in the Division of Behavioral Health and will accrue the hours necessary for licensure by the completion of fellowship.

Center for Healthcare Delivery Science Fellowship in Oncology Research:

· Minor Emphasis: Child Clinical/chronic illness

The Center for Healthcare Delivery Science (CHDS) at Nemours Pediatric Healthcare System invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral psychology fellowship, starting in July or September 2015. The CHDS is a research center across the Nemours system, co-directed by Anne E. Kazak, PhD, ABPP and Tim Wysocki, PhD, ABPP. Healthcare delivery science is the application of scientific methods and principles to the analysis of variables and processes that affect the delivery, safety, outcomes, cost, quality and value of pediatric healthcare. This position is based in Wilmington, DE at A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children although the fellow will also collaborate with other multidisciplinary investigators from the CHDS and throughout the Nemours children’s health system in the Delaware Valley and Florida.

We are seeking an individual interested in research in pediatric cancer related to factors associated with pediatric healthcare delivery and outcomes who aspires to an academic research career. He/She will be mentored on research by Dr. Anne E. Kazak and will join the team as part of Cancer Delivery Science in the Nemours NCORP .

The fellow. The Fellow is expected to develop his/her own research projects and will receive mentored guidance in the preparation of manuscripts and development of grant proposals. Approximately 25% of the fellow’s time will be devoted to clinical work in the Division of Behavioral Health at AIDHC. The fellow will also participate in training opportunities with other fellows in the Division of Behavioral Health and will accrue the hours necessary for licensure by the completion of fellowship.
