Postdoctoral research associate position at Univ. of Virginia

The University of Virginia's Program for Anxiety, Cognition and Treatment (PACT) psychology lab, under the direction of Bethany Teachman, Ph.D, along with Laura Barnes, Ph.D. in the Department of Systems and Information Engineering, seeks applicants for a three-year postdoctoral Research Associate focused on research and teaching. The position will involve conducting studies that use smartphones to track changes in college students' mental health, particularly social anxiety and depression. The grant funding the position involves a collaboration with the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) and our engineering colleagues will assist with the more technical aspects of the project, including mobile application development and design and development of machine learning algorithms, so advanced programming skills are not required. The postdoctoral research associate in psychology will be recruited based on his/her expertise in the following areas: a) understanding of psychopathology, including factors that contribute to problems in mood and emotion regulation; b) research design, including longitudinal data collection and/or mobile Health (mHealth) tracking, and c) sophisticated quantitative skills, such as experience modeling change over time. The position will also involve co-designing and co-teaching (along with another postdoctoral research associate) one course per semester tied to the grant's focus on mobile health and big data to enhance understanding of mental health.

More generally, the PACT lab investigates cognitive processes that contribute to the development and maintenance of anxiety and related disorders, and the position would also provide opportunities for developing an individual program of research. The successful candidate will design and implement new studies, conduct data analysis, prepare publications, manage components of ongoing studies, potentially write grants, and serve as a collaborative member of a team of research scientists. A PhD in Clinical or Quantitative or Cognitive Psychology, or a related field is required by start date. This position is full-time with full-time benefits.

In addition to the University of Virginia's consistent top-ranking as a public institution, the Department of Psychology holds a high NRC ranking in its combination of research and educational opportunities at undergraduate and graduate levels. Situated within iconic and historic Charlottesville, Virginia, with convenient airport and interstate access, we are located within one hour of Richmond and two hours of Washington D.C.
