Full-time Psychologist (NYC) in Juvenile Detention Center

Bellevue Hospital Center anticipates a full-time psychologist position for a collaborative project with the New York City Administration for Children’s Services, the city agency responsible for juvenile justice (JJ) services. The psychologist will work within NYC’s two secure juvenile detention centers to assist and guide ACS staff in providing trauma-informed care for youth in detention. Responsibilities will include: (1) train JJ counselors and mental health clinicians in leading skill-building groups with detention residents ages 12-18; (2) facilitate the implementation of a skill-building group program across one or both detention centers; (3) co-lead groups as part of the training process; (4) deliver ongoing supervision and consultation to skills group leaders; and (5) train JJ staff about the impacts of psychological and emotional trauma on JJ-involved youth and on staff; and ways to more effectively serve traumatized youth. The psychologist will work on-site at NYC’s 2 juvenile locked detention facilities in Brownsville, Brooklyn; and Mott Haven, Bronx.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will be adept at building strong multidisciplinary working relationships with providers from varied disciplinary and educational backgrounds; be conversant in evidence-based mental health interventions; and have demonstrated ability to work effectively with multi-problem children/adolescents and families. Doctorate in psychology and New York state license required. Experience with a juvenile justice population is desirable. Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred. Qualified candidates will be eligible for a clinical faculty appointment within the New York University Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
