Attention and Behavior Clinical (ABC) Science Program

The Department of Psychiatry at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center seeks applicants for an open-rank, tenure track faculty position in the recently established Attention and Behavior Clinical (ABC) Science program in conjunction with our Affective Neurosciences Laboratory.   The position is expected to begin fall 2016.

The ideal candidate will have an interest in applying cognitive and affective neuroscience to inform pediatric mental health interventions research.Successful candidates will join a growing department dedicated to furthering the development and implementation of empirically supported assessment and treatment for children and youth.  An MD in child psychiatry or PhD in clinical child psychology (or related area) is required.  For all positions, preference will be given to applicants with an established record (senior positions) or potential for (junior faculty) obtaining external funding and publishing studies in high quality peer-reviewed journals.

ABC investigators have a strong background in the multimodal treatment of pediatric behavioral disorders with an emphasis on translationally informed interventions for ADHD, irritability and aggression.  Our Affective Neurosciences Laboratory utilizes several neuro- and psychophysiological measures to evaluate the role of affective and cognitive function in psychopathology, with an emphasis on translational neuroimaging.  The laboratory has a broad focus including ADHD, addictions, eating disorders, anxiety, and depression.   Technologies currently employed in the lab include EEG/ERPs, functional near infrared spectroscopy, eye-tracking, facial EMG and startle response, heart rate, heart rate variability, and skin conductance.  Experience with fMRI is welcomed but not required.

The Department of Psychiatry is comprised of 43 faculty members currently, with planned increases, and 23 residents and fellows.  We have a new Psychology Internship and a growing research portfolio, with basic and clinical science in close collaboration with other neuroscience disciplines across several Penn State campuses.

Over the past 5 years, the department has established very fruitful research and educational collaboration with publicly and privately supported addiction treatment and prevention programs in Central Pennsylvania. With these resources committed to an expansion of this effort, and the collaborating academic departments at Penn State committed to further investment in research on addictive disorders, this is an outstanding opportunity for a seasoned leader in the field.

The Penn State Hershey Medical Center is Central Pennsylvania’s only academic medical center, home to several hospitals, clinical and research institutes, and the Penn State College of Medicine. We are a resource for the most complex adult and pediatric cases in the region. Penn State Hershey Medical Center is a 551-bed Level I regional adult and pediatric trauma center. The campus is located in Hershey, PA in close proximity to Philadelphia, New York City, Washington, DC, and Baltimore, MD.
