The Anxiety Disorders Center/Center for Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (ADC/CCBT) at the Institute of Living/Hartford Hospital (Director: David Tolin, Ph.D.) invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral residency beginning in September 2016.  This residency position represents a specialized area of emphasis within the Institute of Living's postdoctoral residency program, the aims of which are to prepare psychologists to become highly skilled at consuming new research and applied findings and integrating them into practice, to prepare psychologists to become highly skilled at evaluating their own interventions using critical thinking and the application of scholarly findings into their clinical work with patients, and to prepare psychologists to be capable of integrating new scholarly and scientific findings that contribute to patient care.

The Institute of Living (www.instituteofliving.org), a teaching hospital founded in 1822, is one of the nation’s foremost psychiatric facilities. The Institute contains 110 inpatient beds, as well as a school, adult and child outpatient clinics, and partial hospital and intensive outpatient psychiatric and substance abuse treatment programs. The setting includes 35 acres of historic and finely landscaped grounds less than a mile from downtown Hartford, geographically located midway between New York and Boston.

The two-year residency position at the Anxiety Disorders Center/Center for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy adheres to the training guidelines established by the American Psychological Association (APA; Society of Clinical Psychology, Division 12), the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, and the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC).  The residency is structured according to the APA specialization of Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology, reflecting an experimental-clinical approach distinguished by use of principles of human learning and development and theories of cognitive processing to promote meaningful change in maladaptive human behavior and thinking.  Accordingly, we emphasize the measurement of overt behavior and cognitions, case conceptualization based on learning principles and cognitive processing, use of empirically supported treatments, and ongoing assessment of effectiveness and modification of treatment as needed.

The training model at the Anxiety Disorders Center emphasizes both clinical and research experience.  Clinical training aims to prepare the resident for specialty area practice in cognitive behavioral therapy for adults and children, with a focus on obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (e.g., obsessive-compulsive disorder, hoarding disorder) and anxiety disorders (e.g., panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder). Additional clinical experiences with depression, insomnia, posttraumatic stress disorder, and attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder are also available.  Research training includes management of a large-scale clinical research study using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and cognitive-behavioral therapy for patients with hoarding disorder, consultation in study design and data analysis, grant-writing experience, the opportunity to conduct independent research projects, and numerous opportunities for research publications and presentations.  Training and experience in student supervision and classroom teaching are also available. 

Qualifications include a doctoral degree in clinical psychology (APA accredited) and experience with cognitive-behavioral interventions for anxiety disorders.
